Sarah Watlington Spotlights Community Builders Program in Fine Woodworking Magazine

As we dive into a new year, it's inspiring to see our work with Angel City Lumber gaining recognition. Sarah Watlington recently penned a piece in Fine Woodworking Magazine, shining a spotlight on our collaboration and the impact it's having on our community.

Our partnership with Angel City Lumber is more than just a collaboration—it's a testament to the power of community-driven initiatives. By salvaging trees from the Bobcat Fire of 2020 and turning them into usable materials, we're not only reducing waste but also creating opportunities for Angelenos facing employment barriers.

"...Would Works and Angel City Lumber have created a lasting framework on how to share woodworking while taking care of each other and the environment", Said Watlington.

Through our Community Builders Program, participants are not only learning valuable woodworking skills but also creating furniture for affordable and supportive housing sites. These pieces, crafted with care and dedication, are not just furniture—they're symbols of hope and resilience for those who call these spaces home.

Sarah's piece in Fine Woodworking Magazine highlights the importance of sustainable practices in woodworking and the positive impact they can have on both communities and the environment. It's a reminder that every piece of furniture we create is not just a product but a story—a story of collaboration, empowerment, and sustainability.

As we look ahead to the rest of the year, let's continue to draw inspiration from projects like ours with Angel City Lumber. Together, we can create a future where woodworking not only enriches our lives but also strengthens our communities.

Fine Woodworking Magazine's article by Sarah Watlington is a testament to our commitment to sustainability, community, and craftsmanship. Let's build on this momentum and make 2024 a year of growth, collaboration, and positive change.

Dear Friends and Supporters of Would Works,

Winding down this year, we express deep gratitude for your support and engagement with Would Works. 2023 began expansively: WW Community Builders Program Artisans and our team took a field trip to the snow-covered Angeles National Forest in the San Gabriel Mountains north of the city. Shirley is the Artisan Lead at Would Works and was born and raised in LA. She’s now in her mid-60’s, yet she’s never been up to the Angeles Forest. Our city is surrounded by abundant landscapes, but many residents who face barriers to employment also lack access to experiences in nature. This forest visit reflects the growth trajectory of Would Works, which we illuminate here.
